Dear Women in Endocrinology Members,
We are looking forward with excitement to ENDO 2025 where WE will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Be sure to visit our website to learn about programming for the San Francisco meeting to be held July 12-15, as well as upcoming due dates for WE award nominations.
In preparation for our 50th anniversary celebration, each newsletter will provide some information about an aspect WE history:
Women in Endocrinology (WE) was founded in 1975. Dr. Neena Schwartz, a co-founder of WE and founder of the Program for Reproductive Research at Northwestern University, described the start of WE in her autobiography "A Lab of My Own” (Brill/Rodopi, 2010). A primary goal of WE was to increase the number of women in leadership positions within the Endocrine Society. At that time, Neena wrote “Only one woman on the ES council (of nine); none were on either the nominating or finance committees, or on the awards or long-range planning committees. No women had been elected to the presidency or to the position of secretary-treasurer. “This led to the formation of a nominating committee in WE. Due to Neena, WE, its nominating committee and others, women are now well represented in leadership positions in the Endocrine Society. WE has expanded its nominations beyond leadership positions and plays an important role in nominating women for Endocrine Society Awards. Other functions of WE indicated by Neena were to publish a newsletter, host a website, host an annual dinner program, provide travel awards and act as career mentors.
WE has continued with the mission and goals expressed by Neena. Although women are now represented in Endocrine Society leadership, many still struggle with obtaining leadership positions at our home institutions. There is still work to be done! What functions do you think WE should serve? Please use our forum on the website (https://www.women-in-endo.org/) or email (WIE@wildapricot.or) to share your ideas.
Best, Ellen |
